The Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management (DRTM) has been formally established in March 2019. This is an important step to take our education in Integrated Resort (IR) Management to another level. The young department is now hosting the Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree Programme of International Integrated Resort Management, the Master of Science (MSc) Degree Programme of International Integrated Resort Management, and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree Programme in Business Administration with specialization in Hospitality and Gaming Management.

Integrated Resorts (IRs) consist of mutually supportive amenities along with a gaming component. They have become increasingly popular as a business model globally. In the case of Macau they have played a crucial role in developing the tourism industry. Despite the unprecedented pace of growth for IRs and for the gaming-leisure-tourism sector across Asia and internationally, there is no academic institute internationally which offers a university degree qualifies students in this unique area of study. To sustain the competitiveness of IRs, potential talents must be equipped with advanced knowledge through a variety of educational opportunities. Our department contributes to the sustainability of the growth by providing education at all levels with a managerial focus.

Our Uniqueness

We have always been proud of our managerial focus in providing education in IR management. We distinguish ourselves from other units providing hospitality and tourism education by having a managerial focus. This feature builds on our affiliation with an AACSB and AMBA-accredited business school. We did not follow the traditional hotel school model but established ourselves as the world’s pioneer in providing education in Integrated Resort Management, which incorporates a gaming component with the traditional hospitality and tourism management program. We establish a local and international niche in the integrated resorts field (including meetings, incentives, conferences/conventions, exhibitions, festivals, events and gaming). Our programmes are popular among local, as well as overseas, students. In the last undergraduate intake, we registered a 32% increase in the number of applications. In our master’s degree programme, international students make up around one-fifth of our last intake. We are launching a new dual master degree programme in partnership with the John M. Olin School of Business (Olin), Washington University in St. Louis. Prospective students will spend three semesters in the University of Macau and will earn a Master of Science degree in Finance from Olin Business School and a Master of Science in IIRM from UM.

On the research front, we adopt a multidisciplinary approach which is greatly facilitated by being part of a comprehensive university. The current cohort of 13 faculty members come from five countries and have very diverse academic backgrounds, from hospitality and tourism management to economics, and from operation management to marketing. The DRTM leverage its various collaborations with other departments and faculties through its strategic location in a business school within a comprehensive university. Such interdisciplinary approaches will facilitate the adoption of smart tourism and neuroscience to improve visitor satisfaction and to make a better deployment of the government’s destination management efforts. According to Scopus, staff at the University of Macau published 73 papers over the past two years (i.e., 2017 – 18) within the tourism and hospitality management field. In calculating per capita outputs, we are one of the best in the region with 6.64 papers per academic staff. We achieve not only high quantity on a per capita basis but also quality. In the ARWU ranking’s subcategory “Number of papers in top journals” which counts only the number of papers we published in the top six journals in hospitality and tourism, even with a very small group, we were ranked 39th globally.

Given the importance of integrated resort and tourism industries in the Macau’s economy, our faculty members have an established practice of working in various capacities with senior IR industry executives and government officials. We engage senior IR industry executives in the whole learning process from student recruitment to mentorships, and from internships to job placements. The annual event, Mastering Cotai, gives our master’s students a venue to present their thesis to a group of senior IR executives. These executives are also regular guest lecturers. They play an important role during the learning process, e.g., being judges at student presentations. Some of these executives have been invited to join the team in the capacity of adjunct professors and the academic advisory board. Most of our courses have at last one site-visit to at least one of the various properties. Many graduates now occupy important managerial positions in IRs. These have formed networks within and outside their work settings. Our colleagues are engaged in consulting projects for the government and the IR operators. Some colleagues have also assumed formal advisory and monitoring roles in policy making.
